PART II: Our Matrix

"Think like a man of action. Act like a man of thought." I heard a man once say.

I think, given the power, I'd be one of those people that takes criminal justice too far. It's like I've got a tube in my arm. A slow, continuous drip IV of the red pill. The older I get, the more I see the world is not the beautiful place I thought it was as a child. People are only afraid of you if you are able to see past what they want you to see, through to the glimpses of nothing but evil desires that are dying to get out.

"This city is afraid of me. I've seen it's true face."

But I don't think anyone would touch me, even if I did. People aren't that stupid. They know their actions will only confirm their blackened motivation. They quietly wait for the next pre meditated move. Whether it be theirs. Or mine. Doubt would cloud everything in me. Disappointment is an inevidable product of any means I would choose. So, where do we go from here? Do I get to exterminate every scent of evil? Or do I make examples of a few unlucky chosen? Will that be enough? Is there actually any hope for the world? If there is, it's the only thing that has a shot at making this place less ugly.

"This city is dying of rabies. Is the best I can do to wipe random flecks of foam from its lips?"

So justice is God's. Then how far can we go to protect our children and ensure necessary examples are made? Is there any way to completely diminish evil, or even lessen it's thorny, vinelike grasp as it spreads over everything, living and dead. Capital punishment verses a slap on the wrist. Life in prison verses house arrest. Corporal punishment verses community service. Does evil really have classification? The lesser of two evils generally will recieve the lesser of two punishments. But what if that's the only motivation for a person to then act on it. Then again, if both offences had the same harsher outcome, would one try to get away with the greater evil anyway? Probably. History played out countless occasions of human beings knowing full well the consequences of actions, but going forward regardless, getting caught and THEN acting surprised and calling for appeal when their fate has been delt. What's wrong with society? What's wrong with the world?

"Somebody has to do it, don't you see? Somebody has to save the world..."

Destined for Greatness

“To each there comes in their lifetime a special moment when they are figuratively tapped on the shoulder and offered the chance to do a very special thing, unique to them and fitted to their talents. What a tragedy if the moment finds them unprepared or unqualified for that which could have been their finest hour.” And that’s all the motivation I needed to tell myself I wouldn’t be caught unprepared any more and if I would fail again I would fail better. This post is short and sweet but celebrates some physical and mental milestones. It marks over 6 months of consistent, specific conditioning and the disciplined late nights and early mornings it took to get here. It celebrates 2 years of sobriety and the seemingly impossible work of overcoming darkness when you least expect it. It’s a reminder to me of why I changed so much in so little time and what I wouldn’t have been able to accomplish if I still relied on alcohol to get me through my days. And it’s okay to live a life others do...

Joy in a Rainstorm

The best moment of your life. Quick. Go. I've been asked that before. I've listened to other people's answers. It all depends on age really, how far you are in the typical timeline of life for the majority. Answers usually consist of things like; wedding day, birth of a child, moving out for the first time, a travelling experience. And while I see the joy in all those situations, from as far as I've come, one afternoon topped them all. I'm kind've a loner. Not because I don't want to be. I guess I was designed with a strong introvert personality. I like hanging out with friends, but my perfect day off would probably consist of taking myself out to lunch and a movie, then spending my evening on the couch with a rye and coke trying to up my Call of Duty rating. Yup, that's me. Anyway, that said, I had a wicked experience several years ago. I couldve been about 16. My mind doesn't really remember age or year particularly well. It wa...

Discipline Over Motivation

I wouldn’t say I was a stranger to the gym and I had always been an athletic person. I've played everything from hockey, to women's tackle football to competitive paintball. But a few things happened. Sports slowed down from every day to once a week and then only in winter. I hit 30, and my metabolism went from lagging to a stall. And that one extra hard call every month or so hit like a jackhammer. But I wasn't ready to slow down, and over the years I realized how much I lacked the upper body strength needed to perform like I should. Especially when those 12 hours of relentless, callous labour hit at 2am. I joined a local gym and was consistent for several months until a severe kidney infection hospitalized me in 2015. My blood pressure sky rocketed and my doctor advised forfeiting my current gym membership until things leveled off. It took over a year for my kidneys to chill out and to get off medication completely. Our hall was fortunate enough to start a small gym earl...
